The LaGrange chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is once again participating in the nationwide charity bed campaign, Bunks Across America National Build Day, and looking for volunteers to help build bunkbeds for kids in need.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a nonprofit organization that builds beds for children who don’t have one. Since their start inside an Idaho garage in 2012, SLP has expanded to over 200 chapters across the United States and Canada.
The group not only builds bunkbeds for children, but delivers and provides bedding as they strive to ensure their motto, “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”
Bunks Across America is the organization’s annual event where local chapters participate in a nationwide build event, all during a single day. The group plans to build more than 8,000 this year.
LaGrange SHP Chapter President Greg Watts said the local group hopes to build about 80 bunkbeds during the event.
The LaGrange chapter is a completely volunteer organization, so they are always looking for volunteers to participate in builds. No experience is needed to participate and you don’t need to bring any tools or materials.
“It’s really a fun event for the whole family. People can bring their kids if they want. We can find something to do for kids of most ages, except possibly for small toddlers,” Watts said.
Most of the participants are individuals with a wide range of skills who just want to help, but some church and civic groups also assist with builds.
The LaGrange chapter has participated in all of the annual builds since the event started four years ago.
The Bunks Across America build will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 150 Lukken Ind. Dr. E, in LaGrange.
