The Callaway girls basketball team took a tough 54-50 region loss to Landmark Christian on Wednesday.
The first quarter was back-and-forth and finished with the Cavaliers trailing by two points. Callaway had a chance to head into the second quarter with the lead but missed all three free throw attempts in the first. The Cavaliers kept battling but that two point deficit turned into a six point deficit heading into halftime. The deficit kept growing and the Cavaliers trailed by eight heading into the fourth and final quarter. Callaway’s comeback bid fell just short as the team had to settle for a frustrating region loss.
Free throws as a whole proved to be the Cavaliers downfall as they finished the game going 6-for-18.
Jailyn Baker led the Cavaliers offense and finished with 15 points. Raniya Mahone finished with 10 points while Lacey Thomas and Aniyah McFarland each finished with nine points. Keiyunna Maddox scored four points and Tra’Niya Mitchell scored three to round out the scoring for the Cavaliers.
Callaway struggled to contain Gabbie Grooms and Ivona Djikonovic who combined to score 45 of the War Eagles’ 54 points.
Callaway fell to 10-5 overall and 8-3 in region play. The Cavaliers currently sit third in region 2-2A. Callawy will return to the court on Friday to take on Elite Scholars Academy in a region clash on the road.
