On Tuesday afternoon, the LaGrange-Troup Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for downtown’s newest confectionery shop, Scoops.
The sweets shop gets its name from the wide variety of scoopable candy and ice cream, but the store sells countless other sweet confections.
Norma Bird, who owns the shop with her husband, Mike, said LaGrange was their number one choice for opening the shop. The Birds officially opened the shop on Dec. 19.
“We considered Newnan, Senoia and Peachtree City [Georgia,] but this was really where we wanted to be,” Norma said, explaining their choice to open the franchise in LaGrange.
“We kept driving down every other week or so … waiting for a storefront to open. We circled like a buzzard waiting. When one finally opened up, the space was too large, but the landlord said they had a smaller space that just opened up. We saw it said this is the space for us,” Norma said.
Norma said the reason they chose downtown LaGrange to open the store is it’s being revitalized.
“It’s up and coming,” she said. “It has great foot traffic. The merchants around here care about each other. They’re very welcoming.”
Norma said the amphitheater, brewery, movie theater and college being nearby also helped with the decision to come to LaGrange.
Scoops LaGrange is the 13th location for the franchise, all of which are currently in Georgia. The LaGrange store is the newest of the bunch, but several more are under construction around the state.
“We’re excited to get LaGrange. It’s a wonderful downtown. The merchants have all been really supportive, and we’re looking forward to being here for a long time and bringing lots of memories and smiles to faces,” Norma said.
Scoops is located at 104 Main St. in downtown LaGrange. The shop is Monday to Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
