After an early scare, the Callaway boys soccer team settled in and secured their first region win of the season with a 6-2 victory over Redan.
Redan took an early lead as the home crowd was left stunned with Callaway’s performance to start the game. The Cavaliers settled down and were able to level the game 24 minutes in when Nelson Herrera dispatched a penalty kick with ease. Two minutes later Herrera assisted a goal by Jayden Bailey. Callaway never looked back from there with Eli Jones scoring a third goal for the hosts before half to give themselves some breathing room heading into the halftime break.
Rickey Vaughn, Greyson Batchelor and Connor Davis all scored in the second half to put some separation between the Cavaliers and Redan. The offense was spread out among the attackers with no one player dominating the ball. Batchelor was also able to grab an assist in the game when he played in Vaughn for his only goal of the night.
The Cavaliers were sloppy at the back on a rain-soaked field at Callaway Stadium and conceded a second goal in the game much to the ire of head coach Mike Petite. Callaway has failed to keep a clean sheet this season.
Braydon Morris made nine saves on the night to help persevere the Cavaliers lead.
Callaway improved to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in region play. The Cavaliers will be back in action next Tuesday with a region game against Eagle’s Landing on the road.
