The Troup baseball team took its second narrow loss in three days to region opponent Whitewater on Thursday. After suffering a 5-4 home loss on Tuesday, the Tigers let an early lead slip in a 4-2 road loss.
The Tigers had some early momentum when they loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the first but could not capitalize and score a run. Two innings later the Tigers broke the deadlock on a two-run bomb by Reed Morris.
That two run lead was trimmed down to just one run after the bottom of the third. A run for the Wildcats in the bottom of the fourth tied the game and then a couple of Wildcat runs in the fifth proved to be the deciding factor.
Troup got the tying run as far as second base in the top of the seventh inning, but with one out and the game on the line, Troup could not come up with a timely hit once again.
The Tigers offense came away with seven hits in the game. Devon Murphy led the Tigers with two hits in four at bats. Ty Medders, Josh McDonald, Demetrius Hardnett, Carson Walker and Morris all had a hit apiece.
Tripp Cummings got the lion’s share of work on the mound, pitching four innings, allowing seven hits on three strikeouts. Hardnett saw two innings of action, striking out four batters.
Troup is now 8-6 overall and 0-2 in region play. It does not get easier for the Tigers as they will play a pair of games against stout region foe Starr’s Mill, who are coming off a big comeback victory over LaGrange, over the next week. It starts on Friday with the Tigers going on the road to the Panther den if weather permits.
