Troup County voters overwhelmingly chose to approve SPLOST VI on Tuesday.
As of all precincts reporting, the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) passed 76.48% to 23.52% Tuesday. The SPLOST VI referendum had 3,498 “yes” votes and only 1,046 “no” votes.
The voters decisively approved the SPLOST in every precinct leaving the result in no doubt.
SPLOST VI marks the sixth time the voters have approved the optional one-cent sales tax. The renewal will continue the SPLOST through 2031.
The county estimates that the new SPLOST will raise approximately $80 million, about $10 million more than the previous SPLOST. Proceeds from the SPLOST are split between the county and all three cities based on population.
The county and the City of LaGrange will receive 45 percent of the funds each with Hogansville and West Point receiving 5 percent each. Under the 45-45-5-5 split, LaGrange and Troup will receive an estimated $34.2 million each, while Hogansville and West Point are expected to get about $3.8 million each.
The money from the SPLOST VI will be used to pay for capital outlay projects such as repaving KIA Parkway and several roads leading to the manufacturing plant, a countywide traffic camera system, extending The Thread in LaGrange and equipment purchases for all three cities.
