Comedian Jeff Foxworthy gave Troup County residents plenty to laugh about Saturday night as he performed at Sweetland Amphitheater. And the county decided to give back, not only with a ceremonial key to the county but also with a few jokes of their own.
A proclamation from County Chairman Patrick Crews included a few laughs for Foxworthy.
Officially, the proclamation declared April 30 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. as Jeff Foxworthy afternoon, but there were a few zingers included as well.
“Whereas Jeff Foxworthy has taken five words and turned that into worldwide fame,” part of the proclamation reads.
Later, it declares that the decision to name two hours after Foxworthy is because “all county roads are already named and the sheriff is happy with the name of the jail.”
Foxworthy sent a quote to the LDN Tuesday through his agent.
“I am totally flattered and honored to be given the key to Troup County! To this point I haven’t found anything it will open, but I will keep trying,” Foxworthy joked. “I love Troup County and this part of Georgia. It is my “safe” place! My escape from a wonderful, crazy life that takes me all over the country. When I am here, I just unplug and be as normal as I get. Thanks for always making me feel so welcome here!”
The full proclamation is below:
“Whereas, Troup County wanted to recognize a great individual; and
Whereas, Jeff Foxworthy is a native son of Georgia, and
Whereas, Jeff Foxworthy was able to graduate from Hapeville High School on time; and
Whereas, Jeff Foxworthy has taken five words and turned that into worldwide fame and
Whereas, Jeff Foxworthy pumps $25-$40 a month into the local economy; and
Whereas, Jeff Foxworthy often takes up residence in this part of the State and is always so welcoming to his fans.
Now therefore, be it proclaimed that since all county roads are already named and the Sheriff is happy with the name of the jail, the Troup County Board of Commissioners have declared it “Jeff Foxworthy Afternoon” on April 30, 2023 between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.”
