The Wood Ducks ran away with an early lead to topple the Cubs 12-4 on Monday in the West Georgia Men’s baseball league.
After taking a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with RBI singles from Braelin Mitchell and Wesley Marchman, the Cubs could not get much offense going until late after they fell into a big deficit.
The Wood Ducks got on the board with a Cam Greathouse RBI single in the bottom of the first. Two batters later the game was tied as a Drew Cantrell single saw Greathouse score. Brad Leonard grounded into a fielder’s choice to drive in the third run for the Wood Ducks as they took their first lead. Jesse Smallwood drove in two more runs on a home run to give the Wood Ducks a 5-2 lead heading to the second inning.
Greathouse kept up his hot start by hitting an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Korey Ison hit an RBI single himself later in the inning to give the Wood Ducks a 7-2 lead. This was just the start of a big night for Ison as he scored the next run of the game when he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Ison was a stellar 4-for-4 with four RBis and three runs scored while also coming off the bench to throw three quality innings in relief.
The Wood Ducks added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and an additional two in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs got two consolation runs on an Auston Wilson double in the top of the sixth inning, but could not produce a late rally. Wilson led the way offensively for the Cubs, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Marchman had two hits while Jaysen Dower, Matthew Fizgerald, Cody Frailey and Chase Carpenter all had a hit apiece for the Cubs.
Wilson got the start on the mound with A Manning, Jaxon Duncan and Matthew Fitzgerald all seeing time at pitcher as well.
Jim Reed got the start at pitcher for the Wood Ducks and went four innings, allowing just five hits on five strikeouts. He helped his cause from the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Greathouse went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Cantrell, Smallwood, Justin Norris, Chase Searels and Jay Wray all had a hit apiece for the Wood Ducks.
The Cubs (2-1) Will play the Space Cowboys on Thursday while the Wood Ducks (2-1) will take on the Dodgers next Monday.
