On Friday, the Cochran Gallery and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper will host a reception for “Rivers and Land” an exhibition of quilts, paintings and photographs by Henry Jacobs and Cathy and Fred Fussell.
Co-owner of the gallery, Wes Cochran, said they are excited to have the exhibition and opening reception at the gallery.
“These are three very, very talented artists, and we’re excited to have their art displayed in the gallery. I hope the community will be as excited as we are to come out and see their work Friday,” Cochran said.
Cochran said the inspiration to bring the exhibit to gallery came from Jacobs.
“I’ve known the three artists for a long time. Initially, Henry, who is a Riverkeeper, had the idea of putting this together, got together with me to make this happen about it roughly a year ago,” Cochran said. “It is great to see it all come to fruition, and I am excited for everyone to see it.”
Cathy has been a practicing fiber artist for more than 50 years. She has sewn and worked with textiles since her early childhood. She maintains a studio in Columbus, where she specializes in making art quilts and related works in fabric. Her art is held in a number of public collections, including the Fulton County (GA) Public Arts Collection and the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery.
Fred is an artist, curator, photographer, and writer whose work focuses on the American South. His paintings and photographs are held in private, public and corporate collections around the Southeastern United States. Some of his recent professional activities include serving as a consultant for Kohler Foundation on the restoration of the visionary art site, Pasaquan; creating exhibits for the Gertrude “Ma” Rainey House and Blues Museum in Columbus, GA and serving as collections consultant for The Carter Family Memorial Music Center (Carter Family Fold) in Hiltons, Virginia.
Jacobs is a photographer, filmmaker, drone pilot and musician. He is the Middle Chattahoochee Director for Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. Jacobs is a 2018 Hambidge Fellow, and his photography can be found in the permanent collection of the Lamar Dodd Art Center at LaGrange College.
Cochran said the exhibit will be displayed from Friday to until the end of August.
“We try to keep at least six to eight weeks in between each exhibition. Hopefully, that will give folks time to come back and visit with us after the reception,” Cochran said.
