The Lafayette Christian School girls basketball equaled their win total from last season (3) in just their seventh game of the season on Monday, outlasting Trinity Christian of Griffin 54-49 to win their second game in a row and third in their last four.
The Cougars were able to open up a big early lead thanks to Carmen Bridges, who finished with 35 points, including 24 in the first half.
Unfortunately, Bridges fouled out early in the fourth quarter and the Cougars had to play extended minutes without their best player on the floor. They weathered the storm despite the Lions cutting as close as five points late in the game. Senior Leah Ward hit a big 3-pointer with under two minutes to go to put the Cougars back up by eight as they held on for a pivotal win.
That was a far cry from the first quarter when the Cougars ran the Lions out of the building to take a 20-3 lead.
The Lions inched and clawed their way back into the game, but could never quite overcome the early deficit they found themselves in.
Reagan Bryant was second on the team in scoring with 9 points, including two made shots down the stretch in the fourth quarter to help slow down a late Lions run.
Ward finished with eight points of her own.
Lafayette Christian School (3-4) will not be back in action until the new year when the Cougars travel to Strong Rock on Jan. 2.
