The Callaway girls basketball team just keeps stacking wins. The Cavaliers hammered Columbia 54-31 to stay undefeated (7-0) in region play as they sit atop the Region 5-2A standings.
It was another vintage performance from star center Lacey Thomas, who scored a game-high 16 points.
The difference in the game was the swarming defense of the Cavaliers as they allowed just five total baskets in the game. Columbia had to rely on free throws — converting 21 of 36 — Just to make the final score look more competitive than it actually was.
It was a fiercely contested ball game early with the Cavaliers able to edge out an 11-6 lead after the opening quarter. The defense ramped up from there, allowing just one point in the second quarter which allowed Callaway to capture a commanding 22-7.
The second half was relatively uncompetitive as the Cavaliers never let their region foe back in the game.
If there was any chance of a Columbia comeback it was cut short by two quick 3-pointers from Aniyah McFarland to silence the away bench. She was second on the team in scoring with 13 points.
Raniya Mahone and Keiyunna Maddox helped lead the offensive charge with nine and eight points, respectively. Takayla Tucker also chipped in with seven points.
Callaway (12-1) has now rattled off seven wins in a row since its lone loss of the season to Hiram on Dec. 18. The Cavaliers have now beaten the two teams that finished above them in the region standings last season — Columbia and Landmark Christian — by double-digits. Callaway will travel to take on Towers on Friday — a team the Cavaliers defeated 84-32 in their opening game of the season.
