LaGrange got a little bit of walk-off magic on Thursday evening to keep their undefeated season alive. The Grangers were able to capture a 5-4 win over Columbus in front of their fans at The Branch.
Cooper Stephens played the hero as he took a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. With one out on the board, Stephens showed a keen eye to take four straight balls and win the game.
The Grangers had to dig deep to pull out the win. The Blue Devils scored four unanswered runs in the opening three innings to build a comfortable lead, or so they thought.
Lagrange chipped away at the lead and halved the deficit with a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Grady Westmoreland hit a one-run single to get the Grangers on the board and Malik Kemp walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to drive in the second.
It would not be long before LaGrange tied the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth to do so. Tanner Langley opened the inning with a monster solo home run and it would not be long before Rob Skinner tied the game up with a solo shot of his own.
Kemp got the start on the mound for the Grangers and went 2 ⅓ innings. Despite allowing just one hit, he struggled with his control at times. Kayden Sutton pitched the final 4 ⅓ innings and was superb, allowing just two hits on eight strikeouts.
Skinner led the offensive charge, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Langley, Westmoreland, Gryson Cockrell, and Mason Calhoun all had a hit apiece in the game.
LaGrange (5-0) is off to a blazing start in 2024. The Grangers will rematch the Blue Devils on the road Friday night in what should be another thrilling encounter between the two teams.
