The Callaway girls soccer team started out their 2024 region play with a bang on Wednesday, dominating Towers 10-0 in a game that lasted less than 50 minutes before the mercy rule was triggered.
It was a day to get a ton of girls on the scoresheet and, the Cavaliers’ young squad was more than up to the task. Callaway had eight different goalscorers on the night.
Alice Potie scored two goals on the evening and opened her and the Cavaliers’ bank account in just the second minute of the game. Callaway would double its advantage a mere minute later when Isla Garcia found the back of the net.
Rosa Gomez made it 3-0 in the 11th minute when she stepped up and coolly dispatched a penalty kick. Mary Kate Baswell scored a goal minutes later to make it 4-0.
Two freshmen got in on the scoring to make it 6-0 as Norma Trinidad and Sofia Flores scored in the 30th and 31st minute, respectively.
Garcia got her second before the halftime whistle and Lili Cook got in on the fun with a goal just a minute before the halftime whistle.
With an 8-0 lead at halftime, the game was in little doubt heading to a shortened second half.
Potie got her second of the evening before Daynay Velasquez ended the game with a penalty kick just eight minutes into the second half.
Despite not finding the back of the net herself, Aylin Ulloa played a pivotal part in the attack and finished with a hat trick of assists. Baswell had a pair of assists while Trinidad registered one as well.
Katie Beth Bass got the start in goal and kept a clean sheet for the Cavaliers.
Callaway is now 3-4 overall and 1-0 in region play. The Cavaliers will have another region clash when they travel to take on Redan next Tuesday.
