The Troup Tigers were victorious in their region opener on Tuesday, topping Whitewater 3-1. The Tigers missed the playoffs last year in large part because they lost two close games to the Wildcats. Troup flipped the script this year and went on the road to earn its most important win of the season.
The Tigers opened up the scoring in the top of the second when Torreion Delaney grounded out a fielder’s choice to break the deadlock.
Troup extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Fisher Baltzell and Delaney each hit one-run singles back-to-back. When offense was at a premium for both sides, these guys came through with some timely hits.
The Wildcats finally got on the board in the bottom of the second, but one run was all they could manage.
Jake Perry got the start on the mound and limited Whitewater to just three hits and one earned run on 4 ⅓ innings of work, striking out six batters along the way. Demetrius Hardnett was equally impressive on the mound pitching the rest of the game, striking out three and allowing no hits.
Garrison Edwards, Ethan Goff, Delaney and Baltzell all had a hit apiece in the game.
Troup has now won six games in a row to improve to 8-5 overall and more importantly start 1-0 in region play. The Tigers will host Whitewater on Thursday.
