Callaway went to battle with Eagle’s Landing at Callaway Stadium on Friday and earned a hard-fought 4-0 victory in the rain. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Callaway High, but rain bogged down the field, so the Cavaliers pivoted to play at their home away from home.
Kadence Leithleiter broke the deadlock in just the fourth minute of play courtesy of an assist from Aylin Ulloa.
Callaway doubled its lead 6 minutes later when freshman Sofia Flores found the back of the net.
Mary Kate Baswell scored directly off a corner kick to make it 3-0 in the 31st minute. Baswell, a senior, had a big part to play in the win and also contributed an assist when she teed up Flores in the 10th minute.
Callaway took a 3-0 lead into halftime but was not done there. Ulloa scored just three minutes into the second half on an assist from Leithleiter.
The Cavaliers had multiple chances to score a fifth and possibly a sixth goal, but the Chargers’ goalkeeper made some quality saves in goal to avoid getting blown out.
Alayna Leithleiter made one save in goal as she combined to earn a clean sheet with Katie Beth Bass.
Callaway is now 5-4 on the season and over .500 for the first time since winning its season opener back on Feb. 8. The Cavaliers have won three games in a row — all region matchups — to start 3-0 in the Region 5-2A standings. Callaway will travel to take on non-region opponent Bowden on Monday.
