The Troup Retired Educators Association (TREA) awarded Callaway High School student, Khadra Veal, a $1,000 scholarship at their monthly meeting, Thursday, April 25, at Highland Country Club. The scholarship is in honor of Curmilla Furgerson who was an outstanding teacher in the LaGrange and Troup County School Systems.
Each year, a student who aspires to become a teacher is selected from one of the three area high schools. This year’s recipient explained that her desire to become a teacher is because she wanted to become like her grandmother.
“I want to be like my amazing grandmother, Elaine Nave. Throughout my entire life, my grandmother has been a big influence especially when I was first learning my sight words. Most of you know those are very hard to push through a sassy girl’s head. My Nana always pushed me to be great and exceed especially in the education department. She is the one that influenced me to want to impact other lives.”
Khadra is the daughter of Amanda and Chuck Veal. She plans to attend LaGrange College in the fall.
