Amid the chaos on Tuesday with the election and scrambling to replace a polling place after a tractor-trailer truck knocked out power for the precinct, the Troup County Board of Commissioners also managed to hold a board meeting.

During the meeting, the commissioners heard requests from three county departments asking for approval to apply for a trio of grants for Accountability Court housing, bulletproof vests for the Sheriff’s Office and GDOT funds for Troup Transit.

The commissioners approved a request from Troup County Accountability Courts to apply for the FY 23 Accountability Court Housing Grant.

The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council is looking to award a million between about 10 entities, so the county is seeking $100,000 in funds from the housing grant.

The funds aim to help put individuals involved in accountability court into hotels or provide transitional housing for truly homeless participants.

There is no matching requirement if the grant is approved.

The commissioners also signed off on applying for funds through the Bureau of Justice Assistance Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program. 

The program reimburses local governments for up to 50 percent of the cost of body armor vests purchased for law enforcement officers.

Troup County Sheriff’s Office plans to replace/purchase 15 new vests at $677 each for a total of $10,155, half of which will be reimbursed through the program.

The commissioners also approved the acceptance of a total of $735,379 in state, federal and local funds for FTA’s Section 5311 Rural Assistance Program.

The funds will provide money for a new van for Troup Transit and other equipment along with annual operating expenses.
