Less than 10 percent of registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s runoff election for a trio of Republican primaries.
While only a portion of Troup County was eligible to cast ballots for the District 2 and 3 Board of Commissioners Republican, all 48,724 voters in Troup County were able to vote in the District 3 Congressional primary.
A total of 4,239 ballots were cast during the runoff for an 8.7 percent overall turnout.
Most people voted on Election Day with 2,888 (68.1%) in-person votes cast on June 18. About a quarter of voters took advantage of early voting with 1,192 (28.1%) casting advanced voting ballots. Only a small percentage of voters cast absentee ballots mail at 159 (3.7%).
No provisional ballots were received.
Understandably, the majority of the votes were cast in the U.S. House of Representatives Republican primary between Mike Dugan and Brian Jack. Jack defeated Dugan and will face Democrat Maura Keller and Independent George Cantrell in November.
The individual County Commissioner primary runoffs saw a slightly higher turnout by district.
The race between Jamie Thrailkill and Ellis Cadenhead for the Board of Commissioner District 2 Republican primary saw a total of 1,681 votes cast from 12.58 percent of the 13,362 registered voters in the district. Thrailkill won the runoff ousting the incumbent Cadenhead in a 1,174-496.
Thrailkill will face Democrat Andrew Moody in the general election in November.
The Board of Commissioner District 3 Republican primary saw a similar turnout with 1,435 votes cast from 10.89 percent of the 13,180 registered voters in the district. Political newcomer Rex Scott won the runoff ousting Davis 769-660.
No Democrat or Independent candidates have qualified for the general election, so Scott has effectively won the seat.
These numbers are still unofficial. Official certification of the votes will be done on Monday, June 24 at 9 a.m.
