On Monday, friends, family and other loved ones gave a triumphant welcome home to cancer survivor Kaydence Highland.
Firefighters and deputies escorted the 15-year-old to her home church at Teaver Road Baptist Church on Monday evening after she courageously battled and beat leukemia.
The teen was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia back in August 2021 at the age of 12. After undergoing many rounds of chemotherapy, Kaydence appeared to be winning the battle against cancer but doctors confirmed in December that the leukemia had returned.
But Kaydence’s story doesn’t end there. She continued to fight and with the help of a bone marrow transplant, doctors say she is cancer-free as of March.
Kaydence’s mom, Lynn Highland, says this is her daughter’s first time home since the transplant and learning she is cancer-free.
Dozens gathered at the church to welcome Kaydence home, celebrating her with signs and balloons.
Kaydence said the experience was a bit overwhelming but she is happy to be home.
“We’re just grateful and blessed and couldn’t be happier,” Lynn said.
