LaGrange High volleyball is set to give back to the community this Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Partnering with Ujima Tribe, a local non-profit organization, the team will be hosting the first annual A Day in the Garden.

“I’m super excited,” said Mehgan Smith, head coach of LaGrange volleyball and VP of Ujima Tribe. “It’s like two of my babies coming together and it’s gonna be a really good day, we’re going to plant some flowers. Clockwork Performance is going to come and he said he’s going to bring about 40 to 60 kids. It’s going to be a huge, huge event. Literally, tons of kids out there learning about gardening.”

The community garden has been in place for three years now and as the garden has grown so has the mission around it. It now serves as a good chance to further spread the word about the community garden as well as gardening in general.

“Me and my president got into a kind of health check, like really monitoring what’s going on in our bodies, but then it got to the point where we went to the grocery store, and we would be spending all this money on the organic vegetables and stuff and we started thinking we can do this ourselves like we can grow food ourselves, so we started the garden three years ago and it was very small at first,” Smith said. “Now, we have over 20 fruits and vegetables out there.”

It will be a day of learning and giving back, but also a day for fun.

“So once you know we get all the work and stuff done, we will have some smoothies, some ice cream, play some volleyball, we will have some good music going and hopefully, we’ll have some vegetables to harvest for everyone to take home,” Smith said. “It should be a good day to plant some flowers, pull some weeds and really grow together as a community.”

The Planted Roots Garden is located at 115 E Cannon Street in LaGrange. The community is invited to come out on Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
