Sleep in Heavenly Peace is hosting a Community Bed Build Day from 9:00 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 20.  The event will be held at New Ventures, 150 Lukken Industrial Drive.

The local chapter of the national organization works to provide a bed for the children of LaGrange who may not have proper sleeping arrangements.

“We get a group of volunteers together on a Saturday and actually build a headboard, side rails and slats and things, and store those until we deliver them to children,” Watts said.

Those interested in volunteering to assemble can pre-register at shpbeds.org. Another volunteer team will deliver the beds and assemble them at the homes.

Watts said they get new applications from families needing beds weekly. Since the local chapter started in 2018, the multiple build events have produced around 1,800 beds for children around LaGrange.

“We haven’t lacked for need since we started,” Watts said. “Situations change, you know, people have to move and get divorced and all kinds of situations where people find themselves in that kind of position.”

No expertise or materials are required to participate in the event. Every Build Day is sponsored to pay for the materials, bedding and tools necessary for the beds. This event is sponsored by Starbucks.

“We have kids as old as 6, 7 years old, to people in their 90s working,” Watts said. “There’s nothing required other than willing hands and somebody who wants to go spend some time with a good group of people in the morning and build beds.”

To find other events or support the chapter, go to shpbeds.org and find the LaGrange chapter. The next build day will be Bunks Across America, a nationwide event for chapters, on Sept. 14.
