After suffering their first loss last time out, the LaGrange softball team bounced back in a big way on Tuesday, defeating Spalding 12-3.
The Grangers grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Hudson Wood got the fun started with a one-run double and Shelby Siggers doubled the lead moments later with a one-run single.
LaGrange would make it 4-0 after scoring two more runs in the second inning. Freshman Dakota McDaniel hit an inside-the-park home run to drive home both runs. It’s the first varsity home run of her career.
LaGrange added two more runs in the third inning. Siggers grounded out to drive home Ta’Niya Taylor for the first run of the inning. Tatiana Dudley hit a one-run single to make it 6-0.
The Jaguars eventually struck back with runs of their own in the bottom of the third to cut the LaGrange lead to four.
The Grangers were unfazed and the offense kept on chugging, adding three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Carolyne Garcia hit a one-run single to get the action started. Wood then proceeded to hit a two-run homer to give the Grangers a 9-2 lead.
LaGrange tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend its lead out to double-digits.
Abby McGill hit a sacrifice fly to drive home the first run of the inning. Kimberly Reynolds scored on an error. Wood hit a one-run single to make it 12-2 LaGrange.
The Jaguars got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it only served as a consolation run.
Wood was simply spectacular in the game, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. McDaniel also had an impressive showing from the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Siggers and Reynolds had two hits each while Dudley, Garcia and Jasia Swanson all had a hit apiece.
Senior Kaylee Foster got the start in the circle and put in her best performance of the season so far, pitching a strong five innings in which she allowed just one hit and no earned runs on eight strikeouts. Fellow senior Zoe Thompson pitched the final inning for the Grangers.
LaGrange is now 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in region play. The Grangers will return to action on Thursday for a region matchup on the road to Sandy Creek. LaGrange has yet to play a game at home this season.
