The Lafayette Christian football team is unstoppable at the moment. The Cougars completely dismantled Fideles 40-6 on Friday to extend their win streak to three games to start the season.

The Cougar defense has been one of the abilities best in GAPPS this season and have let in just 20 points through three games (the Cougars have allowed 27 points against, but seven of those came on an interception return for a touchdown in week one).

“Our defense went out there and did what they were supposed to do,” LCS coach Jarred Pike said. “Our defense has been on point so far this season, but they haven’t really been challenged yet.”

The offense has also been outstanding so far this season and it took no time for them to get the scoring started when Noah Childree found the end zone on a 9-yard rush to put the Cougars up 6-0.

The Cougars struck in a flurry and took a 19-0 lead before the Rangers even knew what hit them. Senior quarterback David Karvelas tossed a pair of touchdowns, one to Caleb Hinton and the second to Johnathan Ross.

“We went out there and had a fast start which we really did not do last year,” Pike said. “We were able to get some of our freshmen in by the third quarter and the fans loved seeing that.”

Hinton, a sophomore, is in his first season playing football with the Cougars and has made an instant impact on both sides of the ball.

The Cougars were not done adding to their lead in the first quarter as Karvelas threw his third touchdown in the opening 10 minutes of the game when he found Ross for a 55-yard pass.

Childree put the dagger in when he scored on a 16-yard rush with 10:55 left to go in the first half.

With a 33-0 lead Lafayette Christian emptied the bench and got some of the more inexperienced players some varsity minutes.

The Cougars would not find the end zone again in the first half but Childree, a senior, would find the end zone for a third time early in the second half as he scampered over the goal line for a 32-yard rush.

“He’s a great player for us and has such a good motor,” Pike said of Childree.

One of the key differences from last year to this year is the play the Cougars are getting in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

“They (offensive and defensive line) have played a lot better this season,” Pike said. “They are getting better each week and Liam Carroll has done a great job with our offense as our center. I’ve been impressed with all of them so far.”

The Lafayette Christian shutout bid was ruined later in the fourth quarter as the Rangers found the end zone against the Cougar reserves.

Lafayette Christian improved to 3-0 on the young season. The Cougars will have a bye week before returning to action for their fourth straight home to start the season on Sept. 13 against Pinecrest Academy.

“We will find out what we are really made of soon enough,” Pike said. “I was hoping for a tougher test tonight, but we didn’t get that.”
