The Lafayette Christian homecoming did not go according to plan. The Cougars took their first loss of the season 34-20 to a stout Pinecrest team.

Despite the loss the Cougars can take small solace in the fact that they became the first team to score more than once on Pinecrest so far this season.

The Paladins took no time opening the scoring in hostile territory, taking the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. Pinecrest would take a 13-0 lead late in the first quarter before making it 21 unanswered points to start the game in the second quarter.

The Cougars eventually woke up when David Karvelas connected with Connor Hudson on a 61-yard touchdown with 2:35 left in the first half.

The Paladins would silence the home crowd again when they scored a touchdown with just 14 seconds left in the first half, taking a 27-6 lead.

Pinecrest would add to its lead with a touchdown in the third quarter, its final score of the game.

A 35-yard touchdown run by Karvelas to start the fourth quarter gave the Cougars a little bit of life, but they never truly threatened to get back in the game.

Lafayette Christian would tack on a touchdown with five seconds to go which did little but make the final score line a bit more flattering to the home team.

The Cougars defense, which let up a total of 20 points through the first three weeks, was challenged in ways they had not been to start the season. The Cougars’ defense held its own but got precious little help from the offense through the first three quarters.

Lafayette Christian fell to 3-1 overall. The Cougars will play their first road game of the season next Friday at Holy Ground.
