The Troup softball team breezed to a home region win on Thursday, trumping Upson-Lee 15-0.
The Tigers had no trouble scoring as evident by the final score and it started early with the home team taking a 3-0 lead after the opening inning of play. Candy Bassett hit a two-out double to drive in the opening run and break the deadlock. Cayleigh Godfrey followed with a one-run single. An error allowed the final run of the inning to score.
Errors were the name of the game for Upson-Lee as the team committed six in a game that lasted less than three full innings.
The Tigers would take that early momentum into the second inning where they added four more runs to their tally. Maddie Colson got in on the action with a one-run single to open the scoring in the inning. Kaylee Umfress hit a single to drive home Colson and an error later in the inning allowed two more base runners to reach home plate and give Troup a 7-0 lead.
The Tigers delivered the knockout blow in the third inning by scoring a whopping eight runs.
Bassett had a field day from the plate and in the circle. The team’s lone senior got just her second start of the season in the circle after recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. She excelled, allowing just three hits on three strikeouts. The senior was also a cool 2-for-3 from the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Zoe Graham also finished the game with two hits while Umfress, Godfrey, Colson and Kaitlyn Smalley all had one apiece.
Troup snapped a four-game sling streak to improve to 8-11 overall and 6-4 in region play. The Tigers will play at region leader Trinity Christian next Tuesday.
