4:45 p.m. Progress Report on Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene is now to Category 3 Hurricane. The Tropical storm conditions will likely reach Troup County this evening. Heavy rainfall is expected, with 2 to 3 inches possible.

According to the National Weather Service of Peachtree City, LaGrange and Troup County are forecast for tropical storm conditions tonight and into Friday morning.

According to NWS Peachtree City, half of Troup County is in the High Risk (level 4/4) Zone for excessive rainfall is in effect until 8 a.m. on Friday. Days of High risk account for a third of flood-related deaths and 80 percent of flood-related damages.

Flooding and flash flooding is probably the biggest concern for Troup County. Some areas in east Central Alabama have already received 2-4 inches of rain and could see an additional 4-8 inches.

Currently, the peak wind forecast calls for 13-21 mph with gusts up to 36 mph going into Friday afternoon.

The low temperatures are around 63. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 2 and 3 inches are possible.

 

Utilities and Public Works:

The City of LaGrange put out a statement saying that the public safety, utility and public works personnel are preparing to respond to storm-related issues. From 9:00 p.m. Thursday to 7:00 a.m. Friday those crews will only be responding to “emergency, life-threatening calls for service.”

The statement continues,” It is anticipated that the significant rain combined with wind gusts approaching 50 mph will cause numerous trees to fall blocking roads and knocking out power. Our automated systems identify the areas where breakers and fuses have operated, so you only need to call us if your house is out of power and your neighbors have power.”
