In October, Troup County will again host a free popup legal clinic in partnership with the University of Georgia School and the Georgia Legal Service Program.
Lawyers from UGA, along with local attorneys, will volunteer their time to provide free legal help to those in need.
Court Services Director Lindsay Mobley said that they will have attorneys specializing in various areas of law, so for any legal question you might have, they can help.
“If we don’t have someone on site that can assist them right that minute, we will put them in touch with someone,” Mobley said.
Advice is available on a wide variety of general civil law issues, including family law issues like divorce, legitimation and child support, as well as juvenile law, probate court, landlord/tenant disputes, personal injury and disability claims, records restriction, and expungement.
Will Downs, an attorney on the State Bar of Georgia’s Access to Justice Committee, said popup clinics like these allow lower-income individuals to receive help for unmet legal needs.
“It’s always really expensive to hire attorneys. So, a lot of the local bar associations have put together these popup clinics as a way to kind of try to meet those needs,” Downs said.
“Anyone from the general public can come in and kind of ask questions, get legal advice and get pointed in the right direction,” Downs said. “If anything needs to happen further, and they need to engage an attorney, then a lot of times the volunteer attorneys will agree to help them out with their case.”
During a similar event last year, a total of 19 people received legal advice during the three-hour event. The majority of those individuals had their legal issues handled during the event.
The free pop-up legal clinic will be held on Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Center on Commerce Avenue in LaGrange.
Persons seeking help with legal issues should bring any pertaining documents related to their case.
