The Troup softball team is edging closer to locking in a playoff spot. The Tigers went on the road Tuesday, beating Spalding 12-0 to solidify themselves as fourth in region 2-3A.
The Tigers got down to business early, scoring a run in the top of the first courtesy of an error from the Jaguar defense. Troup was not done there, adding five runs to its lead. Junior Zoe Graham came through with a big two-run double to put the Tigers up by four runs. Graham stole home later in the inning and Kaitlyn Smalley hit a one-run double to push the Troup lead out to 6-0.
Troup made it lucky number seven in the top of the fourth when Camdyn Bassett, the team’s lone senior, hit a solo home run. After taking two walks on her first two at-bats on the evening, Kennedy McCoy hit a one-run single. Olivia Damron kept on the hot bats for Troup, hitting a one-run single to make it 9-0.
The Tigers showed the Jaguars no mercy, scoring three runs in the fifth inning. An error allowed the first run in the inning to score and McCoy followed with a one-run single. Cayleigh Godfrey got an RBI groundout to round out the scoring on the night.
Bassett had a monster day from the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Despite having just one hit, Graham also had a big offensive showing with three RBIs.
McCoy had two hits while Kaitlyn Smalley, Sheniyah Philpot and Gracie Baker all had one apiece.
Smalley pitched all five innings for Troup, dominating with six strikeouts to just three hits allowed.
Troup is now 10-12 overall and 7-5 in region play. The Tigers will host Sandy Creek on Thursday for senior night.
