The Callaway softball team cruised to a region win over Jackson, 9-1.
The Cavaliers quickly drew first blood with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Kaitlyn Williams hit a one-run single to break the deadlock and then scored later in the inning on an error.
Callaway kept on plugging away and took a 6-0 lead after scoring four runs in the second inning. Ella Kelly got the scoring party started in the second with a one-run single. Williams followed with a one-run single to push the Callaway lead out to 4-0. A couple of fielder’s choices allowed the final two runs of the inning to score.
The Cavaliers added a seventh run in the third inning when Madison Kemp got an RBI on a groundout.
Jackson would eventually score a run in the top of the fifth inning, but it served as little more than consolation as the Cavaliers scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to trigger the mercy rule. Kelly ended the game with a two-run double.
Kelly, just a freshman, had a monster day from the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Kemp was also 3-for-4 on the evening.
Williams had two hits while Savannah Rice, Jackie Pitts, Bella Cleveland and Brianna Pattillo all had a hit apiece.
Mackenzie Toney got the start in the circle for Callaway and pitched all five innings in which she allowed just four hits on five strikeouts.
Callaway improved to 9-15 overall and 7-5 in region play. The Cavaliers will host Westside for a region doubleheader next Monday. The game day will also serve as senior night for Callaway.
