The City of LaGrange is moving forward with plans to turn over its recycling program to Amwaste.
The city council agreed to a request from Steven Green, Director of Recycling for Amwaste, to allow the company to take over the city’s recycling operations.
The city has long subsidized recycling and was losing money on the program to the tune of about $180,000. Amwaste, which recently acquired C&C Recycling, is more equipped to do so profitably due to the scale of their operations.
Green said they plan on offering glass and Styrofoam recycling as well, a service the city currently does not offer.
“It’s a win-win for them and for us, as well as for the citizens,” City Manager Patrick Bowie said.
As part of the switch, Amwaste indicated they would purchase equipment from the recycling center that the city no longer has use for. In order to do so, the city needed to declare the items as surplus and accept bids on it.
The following items were declared as surplus:
- Fhir Banks Scale – FB2255
- 2009 S185 Bobcat Skid Steer
- Hyundai Forklift
- Two 60×36 Balers
- Two 73×30 Balers
- One Compactor Press
- Two 4 Door 30 YRD Enclosed Recycling Bin
- One 4 Slot 30 YRD Enclosed Card Board Bin
- Five Flip Hoppers
- Two Rolls of Bailing Wire
- 20 4×8 Bins
Bowie said Amwaste will continue operations at the recycling center on Davis Road until they transition to their facilities. He said they plan to notify the public through utility mailers and signage.
