The 4th annual Match in the Patch GreenpowerTroup Goblin Race was held this past Saturday and it was another big success. The race featured 18 teams with 13 of those being local Troup County School System teams (72%). 

Two local elementary Greenpower programs doubled the size of their programs by adding a new car and team this year, which doubled the number of students that could get involved. Ethel W. Kight Elementary and Clearview elementary debuted the 74 and 888 cars, respectively. Hollis Hand Elementary plans to debut their new second car at the Dec. 14 event in Columbus, GA, making them the fourth of our eleven elementary schools to have two or more cars. Rosemont Elementary is the only school with three cars/teams at this time. 

Long Cane Elementary and Callaway Elementary were not quite ready for Saturday’s race, but they’ll be at the next race on December 14 in Columbus, GA. 

The next local GreenpowerTroup Goblin race is February 15, 2025 — the 5th annual Kia Spring Fever Goblin Rally — and is set to feature even more local teams than this Saturday’s Match in the Patch race.

There is now a Greenpower Goblin program at every school in the Troup County School System. At the elementary level that means 16 teams on 11 campuses. 

Several other schools are looking to add a second car to double the size of their programs as GreenpowerTroup continues to grow and expand. Troup County continues to have the second highest concentration of GreenpowerUSA programs in the United States, second only to Huntsville, AL. Troup is one of the only (if not the only) school systems in the United States to have an active Greenpower program at all of its schools. 

“What I’m most excited about is seeing the success in our high school programs that have students who started in one of our elementary programs, stayed involved in middle school, and then achieved great success at the high school level,” Matthew Graham said in an email. “I think we’ll continue to see our middle and high school programs excel as our elementary programs continue to grow, involving more and more students.”
