The City of LaGrange has signed off on an intergovernmental agreement to provide funding for a new Industrial Park Road.
The city, the county, and the Callaway Foundation have agreed to split the cost of constructing a roadway for an industrial development currently known as Project Eagle off of Pegasus Parkway. The City of LaGrange, Troup County, and the Callaway Foundation will contribute $1 million each for the estimated $3 million road construction.
The roadway is planned off of Pegasus Parkway across from Sewon Boulevard.
About six months ago, the city signed an MOU with the company to participate in building a road into the Callaway property, which would serve the new industry as well as open up some additional property on the site.
“We agreed that the Industrial Development Authority would pay for the engineering for that road, and they’re already in the process of spending that money,” City Manager Patrick Bowie said.
Bowie said the only hiccup comes from recent legislation relating to Chinese companies being located within a certain distance of military installations, which could be an issue with the National Guard armory on Youngs Mill Road.
“They’re working through that. We think we’ve got a solution to that issue,” Bowie said. “The company has been working on this project for seven or eight years. This one little hiccup is not going to make them go away.”
The county and Callaway Foundation have agreed to pay up to $1 million each, with the city responsible for any overruns.
Bowie said there is contingency built into the $3 million estimate to cover unexpected increased costs.
The council unanimously approved the intergovernmental agreement.
“This opens up a lot more parcels to be developed,” Mayor Jim Arrington said.
