Troup County is set to host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11.
The ceremony will be held at the Troup County Veterans Memorial near the Troup County Government Center in LaGrange on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m.
The event is held each year on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in recognition of the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month when the armistice agreement to end World War 1 took effect. The event is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend, not just veterans and their families.
Patricia Ross, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veterans Services (GDVS), will serve as guest speaker for the annual service.
After 25 years on active duty in the United States Air Force, Ross retired as a Colonel in October 2014. She served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Veterans Education Career Transition Resource (VECTR) from 2016 to 2021. In November 2021, Patricia Ross was selected as the Commissioner of Veterans Service.
The event is put on each year by local veterans, including the West Georgia Veterans Council and Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
Local Army Veteran Ron Will helps promote the service each year on behalf of DAV.
“Veterans put their lives on the line so that people have the freedom to make the choices that they can make today without anybody telling them what to do. They have their freedom to do that because a veteran has paid with their life,” Will said.
“I really appreciate veterans giving up their time and family life and everything like that to be a part of the military and give us that freedom,” Will said.
Will served 29 years of active duty in the Army and has an additional 10 years of service in the National Guard and reserve duty. He first enlisted in 1977 and retired in 2016. Will currently owns and operates R&B Vintage on Bull Street in downtown LaGrange.
The member organizations of the West Georgia Veterans Council include American Legion Post 75, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3 and the 1st Sgt. Charles F. Waller Detachment 1040 Marine Corps League.
