The Callaway softball team enjoyed another trip to the playoffs despite being in one of the toughest regions in the state. The Cavaliers saw six of their players named to the All-Region teams in a region that featured the state champions — Morgan County — and the third place team, Pike County.
Callaway saw its star freshman Ella Kelly as the only member of the first team. She began the season as an outfielder, the position she made the first team as, but finished the season as the starting catcher — her natural position that she will likely hold down for the next three seasons. Kelly led the Cavaliers in batting average (.488), hits (41), extra base hits (17) and RBIs (24).
The Cavaliers had four players on the second team — Mackenzie Toney, Kaitlyn Williams, Karlie Walker and Madison Kemp.
Toney, the team’s no. 1 pitcher, led the team in innings pitched (89) and strikeouts (93). The junior has been a key starter since her freshman season and will be one of the leader’s on the 2025 Cavalier squad.
Williams had a strong final season in red and black, hitting .324 and was second on the team in runs scored with 19. The senior made the team as an outfielder, but her versatility saw her play all over the diamond during her Callaway softball career.
Walker made the second team as a third baseman and split her time between that position and her natural position of catcher. Injuries forced the Cavaliers to adjust during the season and one of those adjustments was moving the senior from catcher to third base, where she ended up excelling. Offensively, Walker hit .328 and was second on the team with 12 RBIs.
Kemp, another senior, had a tremendous season to earn two spots on the second team as a shortstop and a utility player. Kemp’s versatility on defense was a major factor for the Cavaliers, but her offense was equally as important. Kemp led the team in stolen bases (16) and runs scored (30) while also finishing second on the team in batting average (.400), hits (30) and extra base hits (8).
The Cavaliers also had one player named to the honorable mention list — Jackie Pitts. It was a breakout junior campaign for Pitts, who hit .333 with 10 runs scored. She did not start the season as a starter, but came on strong down the stretch to become a starting infielder for the Cavaliers.
