After an up and down freshman season on the hardwood at Voorhees University, LaGrange High graduate Devin Dowell decided to make a move back home, transferring to LaGrange College for his sophomore season.
It has paid early dividends as the former Granger was nominated for the Collegiate Conference of the South’s rookie of the week for week one of the college basketball season. Dowell finished as runner-up for the conference’s rookie of the week award in the opening week of the season.
Dowell helped LaGrange College go 2-1 last week, averaging nearly 12 points on 50% shooting from the field and 45% from beyond the arch. The sophomore guard also added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals as he finds his groove with his new team.
Dowell had his best showing yet as a Panther last time out, scoring a career-high 19 points in a 99-75 win over Welch College on Saturday.
It was an efficient showing for the sophomore as he connected on three of his four triples and shot 78% from the floor. He did it all in his least amount of minutes played in a game so far this season with 19. The game was well in hand in the fourth quarter and Dowell got an early rest, but not before he averaged over a point for every minute he spent on the court.
After dropping their opening two games of the season by a combined 11 points, the Panthers have bounced back in style with a pair of wins to get back to .500 (2-2) with Dowell being a key contributor in those wins. LaGrange College and Dowell will be back in action next Monday against Brevard in a game that will serve as both the team’s conference and home opener.
