International Showcase of Chris Hagebak and his students

Artisans on the Square is proud to announce its upcoming art exhibit INTERNATIONAL SHOWCASE of Chris Hagebak and his Students, featuring a collection of Japanese Sumi-e Art, Coffee Portraits and watercolors that have been exhibited in Japan, England and Scottland. This is the first time these artworks have been displayed together at the same time.

The exhibit will be on display from November 23rd to January 18, 2025. Everyone is invited to the opening reception Saturday Nov 23rd  from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Artisans on the Square, located in downtown Greenville, GA, across from the courthouse.

Chris Hagebak is an award-winning generalist artist who specializes in portraiture and Japanese arts.  He has become internationally known for his coffee portraits, which are uncommonly popular and have been exhibited worldwide.  Chris has had numerous museum and gallery exhibitions, including both group and solo exhibits. Chris makes his home in LaGrange, Georgia, where he has managed the 809 Gallery of Art for 18 years, a gallery specializing in commissioned work and art education. Over the years, he has taught thousands of children and adults a wide variety of techniques and media.  

Chris is an accomplished artist known for his watercolor and coffee portraiture, with an impressive exhibition history that includes the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the National Art Center Tokyo, and international venues like the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York. His work has been prominently featured at various festivals, including the London Coffee Festival and the 2019 Twitter Art Exhibition in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he earned a Board Member Choice Award. Chris has also gained recognition in Japan through his participation in the Art Beyond Boundaries exhibition at the National Art Center Tokyo, earning multiple international awards for his sumi-e work, and in 2023, he became the first American to receive the Salon Blanc Honorary Chairman’s Award.

In addition to his primary focus on portraiture, Chris is a versatile artist working in various media such as oil, acrylic, sculpture, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, batik, and other fabric arts. His artwork is featured in galleries and private collections across 27 countries. Moreover, Chris is a respected art restorer with experience working with renowned artworks and institutions, including the British Museum. He also contributes to art education, notably teaching art at an orphanage in Zambia, where he introduced art techniques to over 200 children.
