West Point City Clerk Richard McCoy has received the Lifetime Service Award from the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) in recognition of his thirty-four years of service in local government. The award was presented during the retirement celebration on November 19, 2024.

McCoy joined the city of West Point as Clerk II in 1990 and remained in the post through 2005. In 2005, he became the Assistant City Clerk/HR, stayed in the position until 2007, and later became the City Clerk in 2007 to present.

“Richard’s devotedness describes what true public servants exemplify – a person ready to assist at any time and in any way possible,” said Mayor Steve Tramell. “He has profoundly administered utility billing, receipt of all municipal funds, licensing, permits, city records, municipal elections, and city cemeteries.”

Over his career, McCoy has made a quantifiable impact to West Point serving with professionalism, loyalty and knowledge.

“McCoy has demonstrated his dedication to municipal government through his years of generous service to its citizens,” said GMA CEO and Executive Director Larry Hanson. “West Point is fortunate to have had that kind of dedicated leadership, and GMA and Georgia’s cities are also grateful to have seen the example he sets for all city leaders.”

Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and consulting services to all of Georgia’s 536 cities. GMA anticipates and influences the forces shaping Georgia’s cities and to provide leadership, tools and services that assist municipal governments in becoming more innovative, effective and responsive. Created in 1933, the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) is the only state organization that represents municipal governments in Georgia. For more information, visit www.gacities.com.
