Long before most will be digging into their Turkey Day feasts, hundreds of runners will take to the streets of LaGrange early Thursday morning for the 14th Annual Turkey Trot.

The annual fun run is hosted by The Inner Path yoga and fitness studio each year on Thanksgiving morning. The run has been a beloved LaGrange tradition for more than a decade.

Originally created by yoga studio owner Lisa Alford as a fun event with friends, the event has grown to become a charity run through the streets of LaGrange supporting a variety of causes.

More than a decade ago, after Alford couldn’t make it to Atlanta’s annual half marathon held each year on Thanksgiving Day, she and a group of friends decided to run on their own and ended up with dozens joining them, so it became an annual tradition.

What started as a simple run among friends, the Turkey Trot has evolved into a charity fundraiser that sponsors a variety of causes.

This year, the organizers will accept donations to benefit Clockwork Youth Academy.

The donations are completely optional, and no registration or entry fee is required to participate.

The race is meant to be more of a fun run than a serious competition, though some do strive to take home the flamingo given away to the winner in years past.  The run is open to runners or walkers of all skill levels.

Participants can choose from a 2-mile route or a 5-mile course starting outside the yoga studio at 206 Smith St. in LaGrange at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving.
