First Presbyterian Church and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in LaGrange are combining forces to present a musical Christmas service.
The service titled “Lessons and Carols” will be held Sunday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on Broad Street in LaGrange.
“Our choirs are combining together. The churches are combining together to present this collaborative service. It’s a really beautiful moment to see churches gathering that way,” said Andrew Harry, Music Director for First Presbyterian.
Harry said he and Robin Ericksen, Music Director for St. Mark’s, have been working together for the collaborative program.
The program will include traditional Christmas carols, some of which will be accompanied by a string orchestra.
“We have string players in the churches, as well as some high school students joining us from LaGrange High and Troup High,” Harry said.
The program will be a traditional service of nine lessons and carols. The lessons are scripture readings starting with the prophecy of Jesus’s birth through the nativity.
“A reader will stand and read a prophecy of the telling that a savior is coming, followed by a carol that sort of corresponds with that scripture reading. We will take that all the way up until Christmas,” Harry said,
“It’s the entire Christmas Story, from the beginning, from prophecy through Jesus coming into the world, and then we end looking forward to Jesus coming again,” Harry said. “It’s a tradition that was started by Kings College. Kings College in Cambridge does this service every single year, and a lot of church services have followed suit.
Everyone is invited to attend the service, which is free to attend.
