The Troup girls basketball team survived a late rally from Spencer on Tuesday evening to notch a 54-52 win.
For the majority of the game it looked like it would be a comfortable win for the Tigers.
Troup jumped out to an early 14-9 lead after the opening quarter, but led just 25-20 at halftime as Spencer clawed and fought to keep in the game.
Raygen Godfrey did it all for the Tigers in the first quarter, matching Spencer’s nine points by herself. She did it from all over the court, hitting a 3-pointer, two 2-pointers and a pair of free throws. Godfrey would score a team -high 18 points on the night.
The Tigers came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring the Green Wave 18-11 to take a 12-point lead to the fourth quarter.
The previously anemic Spencer offense, which mustered just 30 points in the opening three quarters, sparked to life, seemingly out of nowhere, to score 22 points in the fourth and force the Tiger faithful to sweat down the stretch.
After a slump in the second quarter, the offense sprung to life in the second half with the trio of Jaz Williams, Sheniyah Philpot and Godfrey all scoring nine points in the final two quarters to ensure the Green Wave’s comeback fell short.
Philpot finished the game with 13 points after Spencer held her in check in the first quarter in which she went scoreless.
The Tiger defense was electric all night until the fourth quarter, but did struggle to keep Alexandria Berk in check. The senior scored a game-high 24 points with 21 of those points coming in the second half. Berk scored 12 of the Green Wave’s 22 points in the fourth as she nearly rallied the team.
Troup moved to 2-2 on the season with the win. It has been an up and down season so far with the team alternating wins and losses. The Tigers will look to win consecutive games for the first time this season when they take on Mary Persons on Friday in their region opener.
