The Callaway girls basketball has now won three games in a row after beating Northgate 55-50 on Thursday. The Cavaliers had to fight and claw to earn the win in the Heard County Holiday Classic and keep their winning streak alive.
It was a tale of two halves as the Vikings had the advantage in the first half before Callaway took the momentum in the second half.
The Cavaliers won the first quarter 12-9, but the offense struggled in the second period and the team ended up trailing 22-19 heading into halftime.
The Callaway offense came out of the break inspired and scored nearly as many points in the third quarter (17) as they did in the entirety of the first half (19). The Cavaliers saved their best quarter for last, scoring 19 points in the fourth which was just enough to earn the win.
When the Callaway offense needed a player to close out the game on Thursday afternoon it was Aniyah McFarland who stepped up. The senior scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. She was lethal from all over the court, connected on two 3-pointers and willing herself to the line on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter. McFarland contributed more than just scoring with four rebounds and three assists to her name as well.
Raniya Mahone served as a closer for the team as well. The senior scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter. Mahone stuffed the stat sheet with 15 rebounds, five steals and two assists.
Aubrey Chelcy continues her strong start to her sophomore season with 11 points on Thursday. She chipped in with four rebounds and two steals as well.
The scoring for the Cavaliers was spread out amongst their core with six players scoring six or more points. Tra’Niya Mitchell and Kenzli Howard finished with seven points apiece while ShaKenya Wortham scored six. Wortham had seven rebounds and four assists.
While Demarion Thompson only scored two points, her rebounding was essential, especially in the second half, as she finished with seven total rebounds.
