On December 18th, 2024, the LaGrange Fire Department responded to a report of a possible structure fire at 302 Fair Street. Upon arrival, Truck 32 spotted smoke coming from the rear of the building. A full assessment revealed active flames coming from the laundry room. A thorough search found that all occupants had safely exited the building prior to the arrival of emergency services. The fire was quickly contained, preventing it from spreading throughout the structure.
Inside, heavy fire conditions were noted, particularly in the laundry room where the fire originated. It was reported that a malfunctioning dryer, which was in use at the time, ignited the flames. The occupants confirmed they noticed smoke and immediately evacuated the premises. The Red Cross was contacted to offer support for the displaced residents. Crews completed the overhaul, removing damaged items from the home, extinguishing hot spots, and removing smoke so an investigation could be conducted.
The investigation showed that the fire began in the dryer, specifically the lint trap. While electrical issues were possible, it appears the fire was accidental and caused by improper or lack of cleaning of the dryer’s interior components.
The cause of the fire is determined to be unintentional, accidental in nature.
