The Troup boys basketball team rallied for a 71-64 win over Valley (AL) on Friday night.
Neither team’s offense got much traction in the first quarter, but the Troup offense in particular struggled to get anything going and put themselves into an early 11-4 hole after the opening quarter.
The Troup offense sparked to life in the second quarter, but the team still trailed at the break, 29-23.
The Troup offense was able to build on a strong second quarter in the second half. The Tigers outscored the Rams 21-15 in the third quarter to send the game to the fourth quarter all tied up.
Troup relied on its closers in the fourth quarter and had three of them step up to the task — Dee Moreland, Vakeil Garrett-Hammett and Jalen Brown.
The trio went into attack mode in the fourth quarter and combined to score 23 of the team’s 27 points in the fourth quarter (Garrett-Hammett – 9, Moreland – 8 and Brown – 6).
Brown and Moreland led the team in scoring on the night with 15 points apiece while Desmon Cunningham was third in scoring with 11 points.
Garrett-Hammett scored all nine of his points in the final quarter.
It was a balanced Troup attack as the team had nine players get in the scoring column on the night.
Galvin Goss led the Rams with 17 points. He scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and kept Valley in the game late.
Troup has now won two games in a row and will look to make it three in a row in a tough task on Saturday as the Tigers travel to take on reigning state champions Sandy Creek in a region showdown.
