On MLK Day morning, the Troup County NAACP held their annual Prayer Breakfast at Sheer Elegance in LaGrange.
The organization gathers each year to pray for the community and the nation while breaking bread.
Local leaders and ministers, Travonte Cheeks Vines, Rev. Travis Hart, Rev. William Kelley and LaGrange Councilman Leon Childs lead prayers on Youth and Education, Public Safety, Community and the Nation.
Faye Edmondson, the widow of the late Mayor W.T. Edmondson served as speaker for the breakfast.
“Edmonson, that’s my joy and my peace. God is over all of us, but he put people in your life for a reason. Edmondson was not just a family man, he was a community man. He cared for His people, his Church. He helped those who couldn’t help themselves. He was just all around me, and he’s still doing. His legacy will go on and on and on,” Faye said.
Faye said she misses her husband every day. She has gone through trials and tribulations, but is still blessed, she said.
“I’ve been through cancer. I was diagnosed in 2011 and what is it now? I’m still here. I had an infection behind my heart. I had to go home with an IV in my arm. But I’m still here. I asked Edmonson one time, when I did have cancer, why is it that everybody is passing around me who’s dying around me and I’m still here? He said, ‘Faye, don’t worry about it, because God is leaving you here for a reason. Maybe that’s looking at you and gaining that strength,’” Faye said.
Despite what she has gone through, Faye maintains her faith and insists she is blessed.
“God has blessed us so much. We have 11 grandchildren, and my little six-year-old talks about Poppy all the time. He said, ‘Grammy, why did Poppy have to die? I want to go with Poppy.’ Be sweet. You’re too young. We want to keep you here right now. But Poppy is watching over all of us. Poppy is watching over all of you. So just remember, there’s nothing too hard for God. When you cry, he sees your tears. When you pray, he hears your prayer. You think God’s not listening because he doesn’t come right now, right then, but He’s a good God yes. So if I say nothing else, just trust in Him with all your heart, yes, when you don’t understand things, don’t worry about it. He’s going to give you the answer that you’re looking for.”
