The Callaway girls basketball team rolled to a region win over Rutland on Tuesday. After an extended break due to inclement weather (Callaway had not played a game in 10 days), the Cavaliers knocked off the rust to earn a dominant 60-32 win.
The first half was competitive before the Cavaliers blew the game wide open in the second half.
Callaway took a 13-10 advantage after the opening quarter and a 25-16 lead into halftime.
The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Cavaliers came out of the locker room with a renewed energy. Callaway outscored Rutland 19-6 in the third quarter to take a commanding 22-point lead to the fourth quarter.
The Cavaliers completely dominated the opening minutes of the second half to put the game to rest well before the final buzzer.
Offense was largely spread around for the home team. Callaway had 10 different players get in the scoring column on the evening. Just two Cavaliers — Raniya Mahone and Shakenja Wortham — finished in double figures in scoring with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Mahone earned a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds.
Aniyah McFarland scored eight points while Layla Elkins, JeNah Whitehead, Tra’niya Mitchell and Kenzi Howard all scored five points apiece.
Callaway improved to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the region. The Cavaliers will host Westside on Thursday for another critical region matchup. Callaway lost on the road to Westside 59-33 earlier this month.
