The Callaway boys basketball team got a much-needed win on Tuesday, defeating Rutland 52-39 for an important region win. The home team showed little signs of rust despite 10 days with no games due to the snowstorm that affected Georgia last week.
The Cavaliers led the entirety of the first half and it started with their suffocating defense. Callaway allowed just four points in the first quarter which allowed them to take a double-digit lead after the opening quarter. That early lead quickly evaporated and Callaway led just 19-18 heading into halftime.
It would take just seconds into the second half for the Hurricanes to take their first lead of the game (20-19).
The second half was back-and-forth with neither team giving an inch in a region game that meant a lot for the region standings —- Callaway came into the game sitting third in the region and just one game ahead of Rutland.
The Cavaliers would regain the momentum and take a 35-30 lead to the fourth quarter.
Callaway would ride that momentum into the fourth quarter, starting the final period on a 13-3 run over the first three minutes of the quarter to all but put the game to bed.
The Callaway offense was spread around on the night with eight different scorers for the home team. AJ Williams led the team with 12 points while Kaiden James and Tyson Shells scored 10 apiece.
After dropping their first 12 games of the season, the Cavaliers have now won four of their last eight games to move to 4-13 overall and 4-2 in region play. Callaway remains third in Region 2-2A. The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday at home against Westside, who won the earlier encounter between the two teams 67-47.
