The Callaway girls basketball team stayed hot on Tuesday, earning a 49-47 win over Harris County for the team’s fifth straight win.

It was a true four-quarter battle with the Tigers taking the advantage in the first half. Harris County took a 12-11 lead after the opening quarter before expanding it out to 30-26 heading to halftime.

The second half was also played on a razor’s edge with neither team able to wrestle away momentum and build a big lead. 

The Cavalier defense ramped up its intensity in the second half, which would be key for the team. The Tigers failed to crack double figures in the third or fourth quarter. 

Callaway would trim the Harris County lead down to just two points heading to the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers would take the lead back late in the fourth quarter when Aubrey Chelcy muscled her way into the paint for two points, giving the home team a lead they would never surrender by putting the team up 46-45. 

Kenzi Howard would go on to hit the winning shot with a shade under two minutes on the clock when she nailed a 3-pointer from the wing.

The Tigers had their chances late but missed multiple shots in the dying seconds of the game.

Senior Raniya Mahone has been on a tear lately and Tuesday was no different as she tied for the team lead with 15 points. Mahone finished one rebound shy of her third straight double-double. 

ShaKenya Wortham continues to enjoy a breakout season and also finished with 15 points on the night.

The Cavaliers had just two other players score in the game, Howard with eight and Chelcy with six points.

Aniyah McFarland may not have got on the scoring sheet for the Cavaliers, but she certainly made her presence felt on the court. The senior finished with six rebounds and seven assists. 

Callaway is now 13-7 overall and 7-3 in the region. The Cavaliers will return to the court on Friday away to Morgan County in the regular season finale.
