If something about your Friday night felt a little different, you aren’t alone. For the first time since August, there was not a single local high school football team in action. With Troup’s loss in the semifinals last week, it signaled the end of an unbelievable football season in Troup County.

Troup might’ve been the headliner due to its near-perfect season and deep postseason run, but Callaway continued its incredible run of success under head coach Pete Wiggins. Merriam-Webster should put a Callaway Cavaliers logo beside the definition of “consistency” in future dictionaries. 

LaGrange High School was the only regular season team to beat Troup — something we doubt anyone ever talks about in Troup County — and the Grangers showed they are nearing the point of return to being one of the best teams in the state year in and year out. 

That’s how it was in the good days for LaGrange football, and it feels like the team is once again knocking on the door.

And Lafayette Christian, playing 8-man football, again made it to the postseason and had a chance to win a state championship as well.

While we spend a lot of time focused on what’s happening on the field, we also want to remember the cheerleaders, band members, support staff, administrators, coaches — everyone who plays a part in Fridays nights in Troup County. 

All of them work extremely hard and spend long hours getting ready. 

As a staff, it feels weird not to have football to cover. Didn’t the season just get started?

But it’s on to basketball, where we’ve already been covering the Grangers, Cavaliers, Tigers, Cougars and Warriors. We can’t wait to see what the season on the hardwood brings.
