A Troup County couple was cited Thursday morning for animal cruelty after more than 50 cats and dogs were found inside and outside their home in the 100 block of Lower Lovelace Road.

The Marshal’s Office contacted LaGrange Animal Control officers about 9 a.m. requesting mutual aide at the scene.

When deputies and officers entered the home, they said they were overwhelmed by the smell of ammonia and feces. Several of the officers became sick and had to leave the residence.

One homeowner told law enforcement officials he was not sure how many animals he had inside the home.

Before officers and deputies started to remove the animals they noticed the kitchen floor was starting to fall in and the floor throughout the entire house was warped from all the urine that saturated it. The entire bathroom floor was covered in what appeared to be cat and human feces, officials said.

Law enforcement officials captured 46 cats and 11 dogs of various breeds from both inside and outside the home.

Officials said most of the dogs suffered hair loss and appeared to be aggressive.

Fifty-seven animals total were taken to the LaGrange Animal Shelter, which was shut down for the day so staff could examine and process the pets into the shelter.
