Keiyunna Maddox has taken the reins of the Callaway offense in her junior season. After sitting on the bench and learning for most of the last two seasons, she was just biding her time and perfecting her craft so that she could take command when she was given control of the offense.

“I’m happy to start and get my teammates the ball,” Maddox said. “It’s my job to keep everybody in sync.”

She knew that she was likely going to be a starter this season last year, which is why she never panicked or begged her coach for more playing time. She got to work and got better.

“I had a lot to prove when I got the starting job,” Maddox said. 

A natural driver of the ball, Maddox has worked to become a more adept 3-point shooter as well as a jump shooter in general. 

There are still aspects of her game that she hopes to develop over her final year and change at Callaway High.

“I want to be able to see more open teammates and be able to read defenses better,” Maddox said. “I feel like I’ve gotten better, but I still want to improve.”

It has been a steady upward trajectory for Maddox on the baseball court. She has been playing since the third grade and has continued to progress over the years. 

“I’ve worked on taking care of the ball and calling plays,” Maddox said. “I’ve gotten better at getting my teammates the ball. I’ve gotten better at where I get my teammates the ball too.”

Maddox can play either guard position but feels like point guard is her most natural spot.

Basketball is not the only sport she suits up in the red black for Callaway. She is also a member of the flag football team and track and field team. She mainly plays these sports to keep in shape for basketball but has found value in each.

“Everybody kept telling me I should play flag football, and I finally came out,” Maddox said. “They help keep me in shape for basketball season, and they are fun to play.”

Maddox was one of the Cavaliers nest wide receivers and defensive backs this season. She was a big reason the Cavaliers won the county championship and made a playoff berth. 

As a member of the track and field team, she is an important part of the relay squad where she normally takes first running spot. She still has two full seasons of track and field left as the 2023 season has not begun yet.

She has had tremendous success with these two teams but is currently focused on capping off another successful campaign for the Cavaliers basketball team that is in the final stretch of the regular season. 

“We want to win a region championship and make another deep run in the playoffs,” Maddox said.
